7 Beautiful Boutique Hotels and Unique Places to Stay on the French Riviera
The French Riviera is famous for its glamorous beach clubs, luxurious hotels and lively seaside towns. But beyond the busy coastline, you’ll find a completely different side of the Côte d’Azur. Think charming stone houses, fragrant gardens, olive groves, hilltop villages and beautiful old Provençal estates. Time just seems to slow down here.
When choosing where to stay on the French Riviera, I personally love places with a bit of character. That’s why I’ve selected a collection of boutique hotels, charming guesthouses and historic properties. These are slightly more tucked away from the crowds. Some are hidden in the hills, others are located in picturesque medieval villages. All of these have something truly special about them. These are the kind of places that make you feel like you’ve truly arrived in the South of France. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a peaceful countryside retreat or a beautiful base from which to explore the Côte d’Azur. These are some of my favourite places to stay on the French Riviera.

The Most Beautiful Places to Stay on the French Riviera
Saint-Paul-de-Vence | Mas des Arts & Spa
Located in the peaceful countryside of La Colle-sur-Loup, just a short drive from Saint-Paul-de-Vence, you’ll find Mas des Arts & Spa. The charming guesthouse is surrounded by greenery. The property combines elegant interiors with a relaxed atmosphere, making it a lovely place to unwind after exploring the French Riviera. I particularly like the idea of staying somewhere that combines art, wellness and nature, rather than a conventional hotel. The property has beautifully decorated rooms, spa facilities and an intimate character. Mas des Arts & Spa is a lovely retreat for anyone wanting to experience the quieter side of the Côte d’Azur. Mas des Arts & Spa – From €135 per night
Saint-Paul-de-Vence | Le Hameau
If you’re dreaming of a traditional Provençal escape, Le Hameau is a beautiful place to stay. This former 18th-century farmhouse is surrounded by orange trees and fragrant gardens. The surrounds create a wonderfull peaceful atmosphere just outside the medieval village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence. The hotel has only 13 rooms and suites, each decorated with antique Provençal furniture and plenty of character. Some rooms have private terraces, while others offer views of the surrounding countryside or the Mediterranean. There’s also a lovely swimming pool overlooking the landscape, making it tempting to spend an entire afternoon simply relaxing here. An interesting detail is that artist Marc Chagall once stayed at Le Hameau. He must have been drawn to its peaceful setting as well. Le Hameau – From €200 per night
Grasse | Domaine de la Cascade Parfumée
For something truly special, consider Domaine de la Cascade Parfumée in Grasse, the perfume capital of the world. Set within an elegant 18th-century Provençal bastide, this beautiful estate is surrounded by approximately 1.5 hectares of gardens and aromatic plants. What makes this property particularly unique is its connection to the region’s perfume heritage. The estate cultivates fragrant flowers such as Centifolia roses, jasmine and tuberose, alongside citrus trees. You can even take part in workshops exploring the art of perfume-making, from harvesting flowers to creating your own fragrance. With its luxurious suites, beautiful grounds and peaceful atmosphere, this is much more than just a place to spend the night. It’s an experience in itself. Domaine de la Cascade Parfumée – From €250 per night
Grasse | Bastide Saint-Honorat
Perched on the hills above Grasse, Bastide Saint-Honorat is a charming guesthouse with a beautiful Mediterranean setting. The historic property dates back to the 17th century and was originally built by monks from the island of Saint-Honorat near Cannes. Today, it has been carefully renovated while retaining much of its original character. The estate covers more than a hectare and is surrounded by olive trees, traditional terraces and Mediterranean vegetation. One of its biggest highlights is the swimming pool, which offers beautiful views across the surrounding hills, Cannes and the Mediterranean Sea. With just five guest rooms, Bastide Saint-Honorat feels intimate and personal. It’s a lovely choice if you want to enjoy the tranquillity of the Provençal countryside while remaining within easy reach of the coast. Bastide Saint-Honorat – From €242 per night
Mougins | Les Rosées
Tucked away in the picturesque village of Mougins, Les Rosées is an intimate boutique hotel that captures the romantic atmosphere of Provence. Set in a traditional stone property, the hotel combines rustic charm with elegant interiors and a beautiful garden setting. It’s the kind of place where you can slow down, enjoy a leisurely breakfast and spend an afternoon relaxing by the pool. Food is also an important part of the experience, with seasonal Provençal dishes served in a welcoming and intimate atmosphere. Mougins itself is another reason to stay here. Known for its art galleries, excellent restaurants and charming old streets, this hilltop village is a wonderful alternative to the busier coastal towns. And if you fancy a day at the beach, Cannes is only a short drive away. Les Rosées – From €205 per night
Èze | La Petite Bergerie
If you’re looking for somewhere small and authentic near the beautiful medieval village of Èze, La Petite Bergerie is a lovely find. This charming guesthouse is set in a converted old stone sheepfold on the hillside above the village, close to the Parc de la Revère. Rather than a large hotel, it’s an intimate place with just one guest room, giving it a wonderfully private and personal feel. The traditional Provençal decor, stone details and peaceful garden setting make it a particularly appealing choice for couples looking to escape the crowds. Its location also makes it a great starting point for exploring the surrounding hills and hiking trails. Just keep in mind that it’s outside the village itself, so having a car is useful. La Petite Bergerie – From €120 per night
Luxury splurge: Èze | Château Eza
For a truly unforgettable stay, it’s hard to beat Château Eza.
