Perched on a hill between Nice and Antibes, Saint-Paul-de-Vence is one of the most beautiful villages in the South of France. The town is encircled by remarkably preserved Renaissance ramparts and filled with art galleries, squares, fountains, and stone alleyways. It has that typical French Charm.

What to Do in Saint-Paul-de-Vence

Walk Along the Historic Ramparts

One of the highlights of any visit is a walk along the village ramparts. Built in the 16th century on the orders of King Francis I, these fortifications remain in remarkably good shape. From the Ramparts you’ll have panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. The views are especially beautiful in the early morning or late afternoon when the light gives the stone walls a golden glow.

Visit the Folon Chapel – Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs

Hidden behind the village church is the Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs, better known today as the Folon Chapel. This small 17th-century chapel was transformed into a stunning work of art by Belgian artist Jean-Michel Folon.  It may be small, but it’s overwhelmingly beautiful! Inside, visitors discover colorful mosaics, stained-glass windows, sculptures, and paintings that create an incredible atmosphere. It was one of Folon’s final artistic projects and remains one of the village’s cultural treasures.

Discover Marc Chagall’s Final Resting Place

Not necessarily the most beautiful site, but as a fan of Chagall’s work you should visit his grave while you’re here. The village cemetery, located near the Porte de Nice, is one of the most visited spots in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. Here lies Marc Chagall, who spent nearly twenty years living and working in the village. His grave is simple yet moving, surrounded by cypress trees and overlooking the Provençal landscape that inspired many of his paintings.

Explore the Art Galleries

Saint-Paul-de-Vence has always been a village of artists and still is. The narrow streets are lined with galleries showcasing everything from contemporary art and sculpture to photography and traditional Provençal crafts. Even visitors who are not art collectors will enjoy browsing the exhibitions and discovering new artists around every corner. The artistic spirit that attracted Chagall, Picasso, and Matisse continues to thrive today.

See the House of Jacques Prévert

The house that was once the home of Jacques Prevert can now be yours for a weekend. It’s beautiful to visit from the outside, but the apartment is also available to rent. Poet and screenwriter Jacques Prévert spent time in Saint-Paul-de-Vence and became part of the village’s vibrant artistic community. His former house will remain a point of interest for literature lovers. It still serves as a reminder of the many creative minds who were drawn to this hilltop refuge during the 20th century.

Admire the Village Fountain

The large fountain in Place de la Grande Fontaine is one of Saint-Paul-de-Vence’s most picturesque landmarks. Dating back to the early 17th century, it has long served as a gathering place for residents and visitors alike.

Wander Through the Medieval Streets

Much of the magic of Saint-Paul-de-Vence lies in simply getting lost. Stroll through the cobbled lanes, discover hidden courtyards, browse artisan boutiques, and admire centuries-old stone houses. Every turn reveals another photogenic corner, flower-filled balcony, or charming square.

Watch a Game of Pétanque

At the entrance to the village, Place Charles de Gaulle is shaded by plane trees and remains a gathering place for locals. Grab a drink, sit on a nearby terrace, and watch a traditional game of pétanque, a quintessential Provençal experience. This square was once frequented by famous visitors including Yves Montand and Lino Ventura.
