Things to do in Siargao: a 1 week itinerary
Siargao is a lush green island full of palmtrees and perfect surf spots. The island is becoming more and more popular among backpackers and is developing quickly. For now, besides tourist town ‘General Luna’, it still feels very authentic. You can find super fresh Ceviche (or Kinilaw as they call the Filipino version), crystal clear lagoons, some of the worlds best surf spots, a party every night and most importantly that laid back island vibe we all love.
Now, let me tell you all about the best things to do in Siargao!

Take surf lessons
Siargao is a surf destination! If you’re visiting, but not surfing, you’re missing out. They have surf spots for all levels and especially if you can practice a few days in a row you’ll see how quickly you progress. The local guys know exactly where to go! I’d taken a lesson about 8 years ago, so my experience was second to none. We started lessons at secret beach which had nice easy small waves and I was able to catch them straight away. After a few days my instructor took me to cemetery, which is a more intermediate spot. I wouldn’t recommend going out here by yourself as a beginner, but with an instructor it’s a good safe way to start trying some bigger waves. There are a lot more really good surf spots around, but always check with the locals where you can find the best conditions that day. Generally it’s best to surf mid to high tide and avoid low tide.

Cloud 9
This is the famous surf spot that many surfers come to the island for. If you’re not a pro, you can hang at the beach with a drink and then walk to the pier to just watch the surfers at cloud 9. You can find many surf instructors around here as well, if you are looking for lessons. However, I would recommend a different spot if you’re a beginner. These days there are also some ‘instructors’ around that are actually not experienced surfers, but are trying to profit of the tourism. So make sure to ask around and do some research, before choosing a surf teacher.

Coconut viewing Deck
You’ll likely stay in general Luna. From there you can follow the road North and you’ll reach this beautiful viewpoint. There are palm trees as far as you can see. There are no signs, but you won’t be able to miss it.

Maasin River canoe trip
This place got famous from its palm tree with a rope swim that was all over instagram. Unfortunately the palm tree with the rope swing got destroyed in a typhoon, but there is now a canoe trip you can take on this river. It is quite touristy, but I was surprised by how beautiful it was. The short boat ride (with guide) takes you to a small swimming spot where you can have your photo taken by locals that will climb a tree to get the shot for you. At the start of the trip you have the option to buy drone footage. You are allowed to fly our own drown if you have one, but it’s not that easy if you’re on a moving boat and they do a great job.

Beta Cold Spring
This cold spring was relatively quiet when we visited an a really lovely swimming spot! If you want to just swim, chill and jump of the rope swing you’ll enjoy this spot! The name cold spring suggests cold water, but the water is a very pleasant temperature.

Drive the Coconut road
Not long after the Coconut tree viewing deck the scenic road will you to a part that coconut trees on both sides. Continue on this road for an epic roadtrip with pristine white beaches and scenery that keeps surprising you at every turn.

Magpupungko Rock pools
You need to visit to the Magpupungko Rock pools at the right time to see these clear blue pools. They are only visible like this at low tide. At first sight I wasn’t sure if it was worth the long drive, but as we got closer I was impressed by the pools. It was a lot of fun swimming and exploring this little area. I visited the pools both in 2023 and 2026 and it did get a lot busier. If you’re lucky and it’s low tide in the morning, go early, that way you can avoid crowds.

Alegria Beach
If you are looking for a more quiet beach, take the scenic route all the way up north. At the top you’ll find the pristine white Algeria Beach. From General Luna its a 1,5 hour drive. It will give you the postcard views and it’s a lot more secluded since it’s relatively far from the main tourist area.

Island Hopping
Just like on Palawan, you can book island hopping tours from Siargao. I personally didn’t do this tour, because I had already done similar trips elsewhere in the Philippines. Siargao is surrounded by several beautiful secluded islands with the most perfect beaches. During the island tour you’ll usually visit Naked island, Daku island and Guyem island.
Sohoton boat tour
Sohoton is most famous for its Stingless jellyfish lake, but there’s also beautiful lagoons and caves to visit. It’s a 1,5/2 hour boat ride to Bucas Grande, which is an island South of Siargao. The easiest way to visit is by booking a tour. There is a ferry going from Dapa port to Socorro on Bucas Grande, but the issue is there is no ferry going back in the late afternoon. They also do not allow DIY tour, so you’ll have to book a guide once you get to the island. It is a really beautiful island, so it may still be worth it to book a night there and return the next day.
You can book a tour to Sohoton here.

Wakeboarding at the wake park
If you want to take a break from your regular surf sessions, try wakeboarding at the wakeboarding park. It has 2 lakes and is surrounded by palmtrees. The biggest lake is 100m long and 30m wide. Both beginner and intermediate riders will ride here.
Restaurants in Siargao:
Siargao had a few of my favorite restaurants in the Philippines.
- CEV: Ceviche & Kinilaw Shack: My absolute favorite place in Siargao! The General Luna Ceviche or Pacifico kinilaw you can wake me up for. They are usually booked up pretty far in advance, so make a reservation if you’re set on eating here. They do have space for walk-ins, but go early if you want to secure a spot.
- Vedya Siargao: Best brunch place in Siargao with amazing veggie options. I’ve tried their smoothie bowl, hummus/mushroom toast and falafel bowl and all of them were delicious. They also serve good coffee They also have a Vegan buffet with local food that starts around 10:45/11:00.
- Masala Siargao: This place serves brunch and dinner and their Mung Bean Koftas are insanely good! I went back twice to eat it again.
- Wild: This place is a little more meat heavy, but they do have a few veggie options as well. Its a little more upscale, but still affordable and it looks beautiful
- Lyma: Lyma showcases creative dishes, signature cocktails and also a more upscale dining experience. The place is a little hidden, so it feels quieter than all the places on the Main Street.
- Shanti Shanty Cafe: French bakery with amazing sourdough bread and cinnamon rolls. ]
- Nattribu Siargao: Local food, but veggie options available. I personally loved the vegan Laksa!
Where to stay?
Sunlit Hostel: Great social hostel to stay in! Clean, good aircon and they organize activities for their guests.
Alpas Hostel: I loved staying at Alpas! The owner and staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and made all of us feel so welcome. There’s both the option to stay in a dorm and private.
Mao Mao Surf: If you’re a couple that enjoys a nice cabin on the beach, but wants to keep things affordable this might be the spot for you!
Las Palmas Villas and Casitas Siargao: If you’re looking for a comfortable and luxurious experience, you’ll love this place! Beautiful pool, friendly staff and stunning rooms.
