Bajawa, Flores – Hot Springs, Volcano Views & Traditional Villages
Up in the cool highlands of central Flores, Bajawa is one of those places that quietly steals your heart. After days of island-hopping and dusty roads, arriving in Bajawa feels like a breath of fresh air—literally. At over 1,100 meters above sea level, the climate is cooler, the air is crisp, and the landscape is nothing short of spectacular.
I spent just two days in Bajawa and honestly could have stayed longer. Between soaking in volcanic hot springs, wandering through time-honored Ngada villages, and sipping strong local coffee with mountain views, it’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down and connect—with the land, with the culture, and with yourself.

Best things to do in Bajawa, Flores
Hike up viewpoint Watu Nari Wowo
Hiking up this viewpoint is a great thing to do early morning. This will give you a good chance at a clear sky and actually seeing the volcano. This way you’ll also avoid the mid-day heat. It’s just a short 30 minute hike to the top, but beautiful!
Bena Traditional Village
The heart of Bajawa lies in its culture. The Ngada people maintain a rich heritage of megalithic traditions, thatched-roof houses, and strong community spirit. Bena Village is the most visited and beautifully preserved, set against a dramatic volcano backdrop. The people are famous for their weaving and they sell their work throughout the village.
Heaven’s Door Bar & Restaurant
After a morning of hot springs and village visits, wind down at Heaven’s Door Bar & Restaurant. Perched on a hill just outside town, this laid-back spot offers panoramic views of Mount Inerie and the surrounding valley—especially stunning at sunset. The menu features a mix of Indonesian and Western dishes, cold beers, and banana bread.
Watch the sunset from Wolobobo Viewpoint
The best spot to watch the sunset! We accidentally took a very challenging route with the scooter so we arrived only just in time to see the sun setting. I highly recommend taking the other way around for an easier ride and bringing some beers to enjoy the view.
Mangeruda hot springs
Mangeruda Hot Springs is a popular spot among both locals and travelers. Surrounded by lush tropical greenery, the springs feature warm, mineral-rich waters flowing into large, natural pools—perfect for a soothing soak. My favorite spot was the little waterfall. Sadly, the facilities are not well maintained and we saw a lot of trash around the area. I still enjoyed the warm water, but I hope they improve on this.
Entrance fee: Price is 20k for foreigners and 3k to park motorbike.
Malanage Hot Spring
Unlike Mangeruda, Malanage feels a bit more wild. There are some basic amenities like a changing room and a toilet, but the hot spring is complete natural. Malanage Hot Spring is best described as a hot river. Hot and cold mix and this is where it gets interesting. The hot side is scalding hot, while the cold one is icy. Find your perfect spot where the hot and cold water mix to find your perfect temperature.
Hike mount Inerie
If you’re up for a challenge, sunrise trekking to the summit of Mount Inerie is unforgettable. At 2,245 meters, it’s one of Flores’ highest volcanoes and dominates the horizon around Bajawa. The views at the top? Worth every step. I’d highly recommend taking a guide for this hike. To make it in time for the sunrise, you’ll get picked up at 02:00 am, so it’s a commitment!
(skip) Ogi Waterfall
I saw this waterfall mentioned on a blog, so decided I should pay it a quick visit. However, it is part of a power plant. So even though the waterfall itself is quite beautiful the power installation surrounding it, does ruin it a bit. Not really worth the stop, unless you’re just coming for the photo opportunity.
